Build a 72-Hour Bug Out Bag:
A bug out bag — also called a BOB or go-bag — is a pre-packed emergency kit designed to sustain you for 72 hours if you need to evacuate quickly. Whether you're facing a hurricane, wildfire, flood, or civil emergency, having one ready means the difference between a controlled evacuation and a chaotic scramble.
Here's exactly what goes in a properly built 72-hour bug out bag.
The Bag Itself
Choose a durable, water-resistant backpack with MOLLE webbing for modular attachment. Capacity should be 30–45 liters — enough to carry everything without being too heavy to move fast. Look for padded shoulder straps and a hip belt for load distribution.
Water (The #1 Priority)
Pack at least 6 sealed water pouches (125ml each) and water purification tablets. A compact filtration straw or filter bottle gives you a backup source from streams or standing water. Hydration is survival — don't cut corners here.
Food
Pack 3,600-calorie emergency food bars — they're compact, have a 5-year shelf life, and require no preparation. Add a few freeze-dried meal pouches if space allows. Avoid foods that require cooking unless you're also packing a stove.
First Aid Kit
A 44-piece minimum first aid kit should include adhesive bandages, gauze pads, wound closures, antiseptic wipes, medical tape, gloves, and a CPR face shield. If you have training, add a tourniquet and hemostatic gauze.
Light
One primary flashlight (rechargeable LED) and one backup (battery-powered). A headlamp keeps your hands free. Pack extra batteries in a waterproof bag.
Navigation
A physical map of your region and a compass. Don't rely solely on your phone — batteries die and cell service fails in emergencies.
Shelter
An emergency mylar blanket, a poncho, and a compact tube tent cover most shelter scenarios. They're lightweight and take up almost no space.
Multi-Tool & Fire
A quality multi-tool handles cutting, prying, and repairs. Add a flint fire starter and waterproof matches as backup ignition sources.
Communication
A hand-crank or solar NOAA weather radio keeps you informed. Write down emergency contacts on paper — don't rely on your phone's memory.
Documents & Cash
Waterproof copies of your ID, insurance cards, and emergency contacts. At least $200 in small bills.
Personal Items
Hygiene kit (travel toothbrush, wipes, hand sanitizer), face masks, work gloves, and any prescription medications for 72+ hours.
Pack It. Store It. Know It.
A bug out bag only works if it's packed before you need it. Review and refresh your kit every 6 months — rotate food and water, check battery charge, and update documents. Shop R Prep Supply Co.'s ready-made kits or build your own using our custom kit builder.
